Tare Zameen Par is a very good movie which talk about childhood and the education system in India. It rightly highlights the fight for each half-percent that every kid has to face as soon as he/she enters the formal education system.
While everyone can associate some aspect of this movie with their childhood and on the whole the movie is nice, I don't think it is as brilliant as people make it out to be.
There are several problems in the movie which ensure the movie ends up as a piece of fantasy rather than showing the true frustrations of a boy with dyslexia.
They show Ishan (the boy with dyslexia) manages to reach 3rd Grade without understanding alphabets and mathematics. How he managed to pass 1st and 2nd class god only knows. I remember I found the 2nd class mathematics quite tough to be honest! But I guess they couldn't get the same kind of acting out of a younger actor.
Secondly Amir Khan just breezes into the movie in the second half and solves all the problems magicaly. The school agrees, the parents agree and even Ishan agrees all in the span of about 20-30 minutes.
The Art Mela ending is quite decent but then again it clouds over reality by showing that the best painters in such a large school are the Teacher (Amir Khan) and Ishan. All other kids are dumb when it comes to art and painting.
The funny thing is, the film is about doing your own thing and not getting into the 'rat race'. But to show that all obstacles can be overcome it uses a competition thereby proving the point that you really cannot get out of the 'rat race'. If you want to (im)prove yourself, you must compete.
That is why I give this movie 6 out of 10.
On a personal note this was quite a memorable movie for me. Ended up seeing two movies in a row on an amazing and gloomy Friday evening.
